About Practitioner Mary Houge

Mary J. Houge relocated to Hendersonville, North Carolina last March 2008 from Scottsdale, AZ. She owns and operates the Acu-Na Wellness Center located in downtown Hendersonville. She created and trademarked her unique treatment modality ACU-NA. She is licensed by both the North Carolina Acupuncture Board and Massage Therapy Board. Previously she was a practicing licensed acupuncturist and massage therapist in Scottsdale, Arizona.  There she had a practice at the Westin Resort and Spa and also a private office.

Mary Houge’s practice focuses on wellness using functional nutrition, acupuncture, Chinese herbs, and oriental bodywork. Her specialty is using Functional and Chinese Medicine to identify imbalances that are precursors or underlying issues associated with disease, then establishing a customized holistic treatment plan that addresses these imbalances.

She graduated with honors from the Phoenix Institute of Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture with a Masters of Science in Oriental Medicine. She is a nationally certified acupuncturist and herbalist from the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM.org). She received her Bachelors of Science Degree from Arizona State University. She received her Doctorate in Naturopathy from the PanAmerican School of Natural Medicine, West Indies.

Mary Houge specializes in oncology support with certifications in Advanced Oncology Acupuncture from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City and certifications in oncology massage and manual lymphatic drainage from the Scherer Institute of Natural Healing in Sante Fe, NM. With regards to bodywork, she obtained the following certifications from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in San Diego, CA: Holistic Healthcare Practitioner, Massage Therapist, Oriental Body Therapist, and Tui Na Specialist. She is grateful to her teachers: Dr. Bob Rakowski, Dr. Jeffrey Bland, Bill Helm, Alex Tiberi, Joshua Kim and Greg Bantick whom were very influencial in her training.

She has been interested in Chinese philosophy and lifestyle since high school. At the age of sixteen she began her first martial art training in Tai Chi, and then further trained in Tae Kwon Do, Tang Soo Do, Qi Gong and Aiki-Jujitsu. Mary decided to combine her interest in martial arts, Chinese philosophy, bodywork, and medicine into one career, an oriental medical practitioner.

Mary Houge’s comprehensive approach to studying funtional nutrition through holistic health, acupuncture, western science, oncology, nutrition, Chinese herbology, Tui Na and multiple bodywork modalities has surely prepared her to offer her patients a comprehensive integrative natural healthcare program. Mary also is available for speaking engagements as a wellness educator.

Mary Houge looks forward to the opportunity to assist you in your path towards wellness using holistic health.

The Meaning of our Acu-Na Logo

The logo consists of several parts. Let’s look at them first individually and then as a whole. This is the exact the way the logo was designed. Everything in the logo had to be relevant to the philosophy of the center. The logo was to be a symbol of what Acu-Na is all about. You’ve heard the saying, “a picture paints a thousand words”. Our logo does just that.

When you put all the symbols and their meaning together it conveys a center committed to providing comprehensive natural healing modalities in a loving way that respects the divine light in you. We will assist you in your journey to “restore vibrant health” with science based nutritional medicine, healing touch, traditional Chinese medicine with emotional and spiritual support.

The Symbolism of each element

The word Acu-Na is a trademark created by our founder to stand for the integration of Acupuncture and Natural Medicine.

The color green was selected as it represents love, nature, family and healing. The color green symbolized the healing power of interconnectedness.

The orange circle represents the sun. The sun rises every day, reminding us that tomorrow will be a new day, a new beginning. The warm rays of the sun provide energy for growth. The sun symbolizes the healing power of our own divine light.

The lotus blossom symbolized the passage from darkness into light. The lotus is a beautiful flower that grows in muck. It reminds us that beautiful things can come from a less then desirable environment, experience or situation. Maintaining a positive attitude and a sense of hope is crucial to our well-being. The lotus symbolizes the healing power of a positive attitude.

The hands represent our practitioners. They remind us that touch is an essential healing factor in all natural therapies. We know we hold your heart in our hands when we become part of your healthcare team. We treat from our hearts. We understand that the health of your emotional heart is core to your overall well-being. This is why our emotional and spiritual support is present in every session, no matter what treatment you are receiving. The hands symbolize the healing power of touch.

The heart is in the center of the chest and the center of the seven chakras. The heart is the source of the most prominent healing energy known to man. The heart nourishes every cell in the body. It houses our sixth sense, our intuition, and our higher power. To have a healthy heart is to have a healthy body. Love and compassion are the main characteristics of the heart. The heart symbolizes the healing power of love!

This is a single Chinese character that means good health or vigor. We place this appropriately over the heart.
